Swing dancing is a form of social dance that evolved in the United States during the 1920s. It has roots in African American communities and European-American culture, especially from jazz music. The first popular Lindy hop dances were referred to as “East Coast” or “Lindy Hop” which is now used mostly for the six-count derivative danced primarily by whites. The term “swing dancing” can refer to any style of partnered dancing done to big band music, but it often refers specifically to two-beat styles (e.g., East Coast Swing) where partners maintain contact on one another while rotating rapidly around the floor with counterclockwise rotation (to right).
